Abstract:
Background
Congenital heart disease(CHD) is the most common congenital anomaly leading to death in infants. The lower gastrointestinal (GI) anomaly is another relatively common congenital anomaly. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of congenital heart disease in neonates with lower gastrointestinal obstruction referred to our tertiary clinic.
Methods
The preoperative echocardiography reports of 100 cases born with lower gastrointestinal obstruction and managed at Imam Reza Hospital, Mashhad-Iran for 17 years (2002–2019) were reviewed.
Results
We studied 100 neonates who were enrolled with lower GI anomaly, 89 imperforate anuses, five lower gastrointestinal obstructions, four Hirschsprungs’disease, and two anal stenosis patients which 49% consists of boys. Echocardiography revealed congenital heart disease in 85 patients (85%) and normal or minor findings such as PFO or FMV without MR in 15 patients (15%). Gastrointestinal surgery was performed successfully in 91 patients (91%). Ten patients died in which all had CHD.
Conclusions
CHD is the most common associated GI anomaly with a high mortality rate which mostly required cardiac surgery. Prenatal diagnosis is highly recommended to accelerate the management and improves the prognosis.
